Parksville, B.C. to Kelowna, B.C. - May 21

My cousin, Randy (far right), and his boys, Chad (right) and Jeff (left) and Jeff's girlfriend, Miranda, came over for breakfast to our hotel in the morning. It's been more than a decade that I've seen any of them so it was really good to see them again.

Andrea's boyfriend, Joe, used to work at The Cheeseworks  and said it would be a good place to go to. We wanted to catch a reasonably early ferry back to the mainland (long way to drive today) but we were all really glad we made time to go because it was really fun for Atticus (us too). I should've taken more pictures of their signs; I found them to be rather clever.

This little calf was born that morning. He will stay in this pen until he's 3 days old and then he moves to another pen (bigger) with other little calves that are of similar age. They don't get to see their momma anymore (or pretty much at all).

This sheep was pretty high up on Atti's list of cool creatures to pet. He'd have stayed there caressing his nose all day if he could (and yes, he did ask to hold him).

The goats live in the same pen as the sheep above. They have a neat ramp they can walk up to a look-out in the rafters. It doesn't go anywhere, but it's kind of fun that they'd make them something like that to spice up their lives.

A bunny he could actually pet, but because of the freak-out nature of bunnies he couldn't hold him without he himself freaking out due to the flailing of bunny legs (and claws). This looks like my brother and my rabbit, Friday.

Finally, some nice long ears to pull!

This was the 'petting zoo' (and foot-stepping-in-poop) area. I think Atticus was overwhelmed by how much bigger a goat looks when he's standing next to him. When the fence boards are no longer between them the brave face of the 2 year old is a bit less brave.

Check out this sign (and the udder under the cow stool).

Some of the outstanding cows (or friendly if nothing else).

Just his size.

Mom made the mistake of bringing cheese into the petting zoo area and was immediately a big hit with the goats.

And then it was a mad dash for the ferry so we could get on the 12:30 instead of the 3pm and get on the road. I figured the kids would be tired after playing around on the ferry and would be good for a nap while we drove the first leg of that day. We had a half hour before the ferry left to walk around the harbor.

There was little kid's play room on the ferry that served us well (on the ferry ride to the island a little boy was watching a cartoon about Grover...when he'd say that it was Grover Atticus would calmly, but firmly say 'no'...the boy would keep insisting it was and each time Atticus would say, 'no'...the boy's tension and frustration  escalated to the point of tears...Atticus really wasn't paying any attention to the boy's reactions, he just felt like saying, 'no').

Ready for naps.

Very ready for a nap.

We made it to Kelowna (this is a great city with a beautiful waterfront) but since the kids were very passionately done with being in the car we stayed in the hotel room and Dad brought supper to us. We went to the hotel's mineral pool afterwards (nice and warm like I like it - it's not a lane pool after all, Vin) and burned off what's left of the kiddies' energy. The hot tubs were outside on the deck and were really nice too, but a bit hot for the kids.

I think we were all in bed by 11 as morning always comes much earlier than we'd like it to.
