Maybe this helps...

This is a pretty typical building. Everyone (except us!) has bars on every window, laundry usually hangs on the balcony area to dry (or at the park over the swing set). Each of these 'apartments/condos' is considered a 'house'.

And this is the living room of the second house I rented (not typical to have a sod coffee table, that's just me). The kitchen is on the balcony (thru the patio doors on the left of the picture). The dark red-ish wood stuff is pretty popular among the elder folks. And the cold ceramic tile is standard, unless you can afford cold marble (the cold floor is a God-send in the summer, but not so much in a wet 10 degree winter).

My kitchen at the house above was something like this; just things added to an otherwise non-kitchen space to make it function as a kitchen (it didn't function too well).

(This was not the super exciting, bated breath post)
